About FSM

Why?

There are millions of blog on the internet so the obvious question is "Why make another one?"  The answer is simple, there's only a handful of blogs that are specifically targeted towards small & medium sized churches.  According to the latest research, 98% of American churches have attendance less than 1000 adults.  Yet most of the resources used in ALL churches comes from the large "megachurches".

Let me be clear, I don't think there's anything categorically wrong with a large church (I don't like the term "megachurch").  Many large churches do wonderful ministry both locally and globally.  But there needs to be some resources coming out of the 98%, and not just rely on the 2%.

I hope that this community will be a part of that solution.  I believe the small church (the "fun-sized" church) has tremendous potential to change the landscape of religion in America and the world.

Wearing Hats

A by-product of small churches is the multi-role pastor and staff.  This means the youth pastor probably isn't just the youth pastor.  They're also the worship leader or small group overseer or the...WHATEVER!  It doesn't matter why this happens, the fact is there are men and women wearing multiple hats and trying to pull of ministry with excellence.

So I hope if you attend, volunteer, work for, or lead a small church, you will find this place a useful resource to spend a little time reading and participating.

About Me

After being in student ministry for over 6 years, I've learned a few things.  The most important thing I've learned is that I'm no expert.  I've also benefited from being in community with other student pastors.

That's where this blog comes in.  I know from too much experience that student pastors are constantly championing the idea of community, but we're terrible at BEING in a community.  My hope is that through the shared experience of small church ministry, we can share ideas, burdens, joys, and failures so all of us can learn a little bit more.
